After six months of preparation, Google has finally released it’s speed update to all users.

What does this mean?

This means Google has updated its algorithm for mobile search as a search ranking factor. You can find out what Google thinks of your website speed and discover the ways you can speed up your website.

John Mueller, Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google confirmed that it would only be slowest websites that would be affected;

If your site is reasonably fast, tweaking won't change things. <a href="https://t.co/4glNAFd0ww">https://t.co/4glNAFd0ww</a></p>— John ☆.o(≧▽≦)o.☆ (@JohnMu) <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnMu/status/1014015857628938241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">3 July 2018</a></blockquote><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.8" text_font_size="17px" header_2_font_size="33px" text_font="Lora||||||||" header_font="Gilroy Bold||||||||" header_2_font="Gilroy Bold||||||||" header_2_text_color="#878787" header_3_font="Gilroy Bold||||||||" header_3_text_color="#878787" header_4_font="Gilroy Bold|800|||||||" header_4_text_color="#9e9e9e" custom_margin="|||"]He also states that those with fast websites looking to increase their ranking factor by speeding up their website, will not be affected.

Google’s Zhiheng Wang and Doantam Phan wrote:

“The ‘Speed Update,’ as we’re calling it, will only affect pages that deliver the slowest experience to users and will only affect a small percentage of queries. It applies the same standard to all pages, regardless of the technology used to build the page. The intent of the search query is still a very strong signal, so a slow page may still rank highly if it has great, relevant content.”

Back in 2010, Google stated that page speed was only a factor when ranking for desktop searches. This Google Speed update means it will also extend this factor to its mobile searches in a bid to improve its search results and consequently provide better results.
