Microsoft has recently announced that it is discontinuing its support for Internet Explorer as from the 17th of August 2021 for all of its services such as Outlook, Office 365 and OneDrive with the Microsoft Teams Internet explorer app is ending support towards the end of the year on the 20th of November.

Whilst many users will still be using Internet Explorer as many old PCs were built with it as a default browser, it will start the slow decline as any new device builds will no longer have the browser inbuilt.

The browser has always struggled to keep up against the likes of Google Chrome and Firefox and doesn't have the support for newer technologies.

The slow decay of Internet Explorer, it will mean that your browser may not display websites in the correct format as from the 17th of August 2021.

The rise and fall of Internet Explorer

At its peak, it was a dominating force and the innovator of the browser world.

Internet Explorer 4.0 took on Netscape in the browser wars. Netscape in the 1990's had an 80% share of the market. As the tech giant was offering its browser services for free of charge the share quickly transitioned to Internet Explorer.

It originally pushed the boundaries for new technologies that allowed for more dynamic web experience.

Until the early 2000's when the likes of Firefox and Chrome made an appearance with a much more innovative and faster platform which steadily took the market share from Microsoft.

In the present day, Internet Explorer has been at the butt of a joke on the internet world with a reputation of being outdated and slow.

I've put together some of my favourite memes:

It's sad to see it go from a nostalgia point of view, but as a web developer, a bit of relief due the technical restrictions with the browser. So it will be missed, but it's reached its time.
