Why has mobile traffic increased?

Website browsing on your mobile has defied the traditional traffic patterns this year, as opposed to dropping off.

Usually, the approach of summer affects web traffic as visitors are spending less time indoors with their desktops, and more time outside, on holiday or taking part in leisure activities.

However, the usual slumps in traffic have not been evident this year with mobile traffic showing increasingly promising signs of growing.

The rise in traffic during these periods could be down to mobile data being more easily accessible. With data plans becoming more and more flexible, users become less conscious about their data usage, giving them the freedom to browse for longer than before.

5 ways to make the most of your mobile traffic

Despite the huge popularity in mobile web browsing, there are many websites that aren’t making the most of their mobile traffic. There are a few tools that you can use the cater for mobile users to increase their user experience.

1. Call Directly From Your Website

Mobiles provide users with the ability to call you directly through your website. You can utilise this by  including ‘click to call’ buttons which always appear at the bottom of your mobile device. Using the software on their phone, mobile users can call you directly by a simple tap of the ‘click to call’ button.

2. Larger Tap Areas
Larger tap areas make for much easier browsing experience for your users. For someone with particularly large fingers, tapping a small button makes for a difficult and frustrating experience. Ensuring all clickable areas are big enough to be used easily on your website is key. Also increasing the padding between buttons to avoid accidental clicks.

 3. Content Length

Often mobile users have less time to sit and read a lot of content, they’re on the move and require information quickly. You can use clever features to break down the text in small chunks or use accordant elements to hide content until the user is ready to find out more.

4. Text Sizing

Often typography can be a little neglected, especially when on mobile. Particularly text that is either too large or too small. Try to ensure that the text is the perfect size to minimise scrolling but is also easy to read on a smaller screen.

5. Run a test on your website and submit it to Google

You can run tests through on Google's test platform, which then scans your website to see if you meet their requirements of 'mobile-friendly'. Once you’ve pleased Google’s Mobile-Friendly test, you can submit it to Google which can help your search engine rankings.
