Since an early age, I was a tinker of sorts. I would take things apart and often struggle to put them back again. It was my curiosity for the inner workings that led me to crave new things to break.
I always had a fascination with computers and being creative with them. My primary school had a computer with Microsoft Paint on it, and one lunch time on a rainy day I sat and drew what I thought was going to be a master piece, but had to be peeled away before I had a chance to finish it. I didn’t know it at the time, but this my inner-designer calling me.
Later on in the early 00’s we’d got our very own computer, slotted under the stairs where I spent a lot of my childhood like Harry Potter, only a muggle with a mouse and keyboard. But with the magic of the internet at my finger tips and the curiosity burning inside of me I did what I do best tinker, and sometimes break things (apologies to my parents).
I then discovered a tool called Microsoft Front Page (the name usually draws blanks when I mention it to people). I found that I could copy templates from websites and edit the text and images to create my own websites. Learning how link up each page was a feeling of excitement that I still feel today. (and incase you are wondering, the website was about ghosts and ghost hunting.)
Fast forward a few years, I was 13 years old. I’d been getting familiar with dodgy copy of Adobe Photoshop 7 that I had gotten from a friend (come on, we all did it!) which I had fallen in love with learning new tutorials and tricks to impress and sell to people online. Combining my love for design and web design I used some old php scripts and decided to create my own game for the hell of it.
Graduating Falmouth University, ready to make an impact in the world.
I entered my first interview, with my portfolio in hand. I was told I would be good at sales in their web department. Desperate for a job and with the promise of doing something creative further down the line, I accepted. Only to be fired two months later because I was too busy designing logos rather than selling to customers.
As an act of rebellion I was to start my own company, Vexal, a much better company. Within 6 months the company failed. I went back to the security of a job.
I got my first creative job at a local publishing company where I enjoyed pushing myself to create new and exciting magazines. That was until it not longer challenged me creatively, so I sort out new opportunities.
Taking an opportunity to design websites for a start up digital agency, with minimal web experience I rose to the challenge.
I would come home and begin learning all that I could about web design and affective marketing to truly target my skills in this area. I discovered that I held a unique set of skills. To be able to use my graphic design skills and build websites.
